Gale to Severe Gales and Rainfall

Issued by: john holmes
Confidence: 80%

During the next 24 hours an Atlantic low will deepen quite quickly as a sharpening upper trough engages it. The track is likely to be over sea areas Bailey and Faroes. SW gales will develop during Tuesday morning with severe gales likely for the Western Isles, along with the far NW of Scotland and possibly Shetland. Gusts of 65-75 mph could occur before the winds turn westerly. During early Wednesday these winds will ease down below Alert limits. Some heavy rainfall will also occur as the system brushes across a similar area with totals of 25-35mm and perhaps isolated totals of 50mm. Most of the areas to be affected do not have large rivers so flooding should be minimal.
