Weather Warning – Gale to Severe Gales and Rainfall

Gale to Severe Gales and Rainfall

Change On Horizon – Valid period: 08/09/09 03:00 – 09/09/09 08:00
Issued by: john holmes
Confidence: 80%

During the next 24 hours an Atlantic low will deepen quite quickly as a sharpening upper trough engages it. The track is likely to be over sea areas Bailey and Faroes. SW gales will develop during Tuesday morning with severe gales likely for the Western Isles, along with the far NW of Scotland and possibly Shetland. Gusts of 65-75 mph could occur before the winds turn westerly. During early Wednesday these winds will ease down below Alert limits. Some heavy rainfall will also occur as the system brushes across a similar area with totals of 25-35mm and perhaps isolated totals of 50mm. Most of the areas to be affected do not have large rivers so flooding should be minimal.

European Snowstorms

A winter storm brought blankets of snow across Europe today, forcing the closure of an icy Eiffel Tower in Paris and causing flight cancellations. Up to four inches of snow was recorded in parts of France, the national weather service said. Most areas, including Paris, got around half that amount. French authorities issued traffic alerts in around 30 regions because of icy roads. The Eiffel Tower, one of Paris’ main tourist attractions, was closed because of slippery conditions. “We can’t put down salt because it’s metallic,” Eiffel Tower press officer Isabelle Esnous said. “We can’t use sand either … because it risks getting into the elevator (cogs).” The cold, she said, is no problem, but snow can be dangerous. A dozen flights were canceled at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport, officials said. The Paris airport authority said bad weather in other parts of Europe contributed to the cancellations. Workers had been deployed since midnight Sunday to clear runways at Charles de Gaulle
and the smaller Orly airport.
